Elton John has disclosed that he is currently unable to fully experience the new musical The Devil Wears Prada, for which he composed the music, due to significant vision loss resulting from an eye infection.
The legendary musician made the announcement during the show’s London premiere at the Dominion Theatre on Sunday. While addressing the audience, John expressed his gratitude for the event and shared that his eyesight has been severely impacted, making it difficult for him to physically view the production.
John first revealed his condition in September, explaining that a serious eye infection contracted over the summer in France had left him with very limited vision. According to earlier updates, one of his eyes has been completely affected, and recovery is expected to take considerable time. Despite this, he expressed optimism and gratitude for the medical team and family members who have supported him throughout the process.
The visionary artist admitted that his impaired vision has created challenges for his professional work. He noted that tasks such as reading lyrics or working in a recording studio are currently difficult, though efforts are being made to aid his recovery.
The Devil Wears Prada, based on the iconic 2006 film of the same name, marks another collaboration for John in the realm of musical theater. The production tells the story of a young journalist navigating the high-stakes fashion industry and features a cast led by Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly, famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in the original movie.
The premiere served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and attracted notable figures from the fashion and entertainment industries. Among the attendees were Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has often been associated with the character of Miranda Priestly. Wintour commented on the musical’s charm, stating that any comparisons between her and the fictional editor are for others to interpret.
Despite the personal challenges John is facing, the premiere highlighted his enduring influence and contributions to the world of music and theater.
